A much cooler cap in hot weather than wool, these were made from reed green herringbone twill to the same pattern as the M40 wool "Schiffchen" (little boat). The SS was actually developed the concept of HBT summer field caps in the 1930's, beginning with the HBT version of the black "Kratchen" cap. Considering the much smaller size of the Waffen-SS relative to the Army these had a wider issue than the Army version, but not as widespread as the Luftwaffe's HBT caps.
