| Luftwaffe Tropical Visor Cap (Troppenschirmmütze)
This is a really neat looking cap. Nicknamed the "Hermann Meyer" as a dig at the Luftwaffe's leader, Hermann Göring, this cap was intended for all ranks. The cap was expensive and time consuming to make and they were never supplied in the quantities needed. Also, they were bulky and hard to shove into a pocket when it was time to put on a steel helmet. For these reasons, most of these caps ended up on the heads of officers and NCO's, some of whom continued to wear these caps in the Italian campaign right up to the end of the war, long after the German withdrawal from North Africa. These caps were no longer manufactured after 1942, when the Luftwaffe came out with a copy of the Afrika Korps cap in Luftwaffe khaki-bruan instead of the army's olive colors. |

| Some authors have pointed out the existence of examples of full blown officer versions of the "Hermann Meyer" with silver piping and bullion insignia, but these were definitely custom made items. The standard caps were all cotton/rayon blend, piped in the same material around the crown. Some caps have addtional piping along the top edge of the cap band, but not all. Ours follows the pattern of the so-called "first style", actually it's just one of several variations produced concurrently by different manufacturers. It has the correct large tropical visor, machine embroidered insignia in German made artificial silk threads, tan painted vents, red cotton lining with sandwiched celluloid sweat shield, rough leather chin strap, and curved corner removeable havelock for the romantic look of the Sahara. These caps were used in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece, and the Black Sea area.
