Reed Green Summer Panzer Uniform

The wool Panzer and assault gun uniforms were found to be unbearably hot inside the armored vehicles during the hot weather months. Another problem was that the black Panzer uniform did not blend in well with natural surroundings when crewmembers were moving around outside of the tank. The solution to both problems was a reed green herringbone version of the Panzer uniform.

The reed green uniform jacket was superficially similar to the wool uniforms, sharing the same waist length body with the angled double breasted closure. However, a large pocket was added to the left chest of the jacket and there were certain changes made to allow the HBT jacket to be worn over the wool jacket. These included the cut-out armpits to allow for free movement, the belt hook slits to allow the hooks in the Panzer jacket to poke through the HBT, and the double row of buttons. This double row of buttons allowed the wearer to reduce or increase the fit of the jacket depending on whether or not the wool jacket was worn beneath it or it was being worn alone due to the heat.

The trousers also featured a large pocket on the left thigh, as well as a strange set of assymetrical flapped pockets in front, a cloth waist belt, and two flapped rear pockets. Many original trousers have openings let into the side seams to access the pockets of the wool trousers when they are worn underneath the HBT trousers, but our reproduction HBT trousers do not have this feature.

The Lost Battalions Panzer jacket has the correct rayon half-lining that is found in the originals and the trousers are lined with cotton. The photos at right show the jacket and trousers of the summer Panzer uniform being worn with the "M43" Panzer cap and the "M43" army shirt.
