| This suit, consisting of a parka, overtrousers, mittens, and helmet (no not a steel helmet) was developed in response to the extremes of the 1941 Russian winter. They were introduced in the fall of 1942, at the same time as the Einheitsfeldmütze, commonly called the "M43 cap" by collectors. The entire suit was reversible from mouse gray to white. The shell fabric was made from two types of rayon fabric a tight poplin weave and a softer gabardine weave. The non-white exterior colors go from the usual range of grays and grayish-greens commonly encountered to very dark purple! The insulating layers were made of spun rayon. The suits worked very well so long as the temperature stayed below freezing. But, once the suit became wet all the insulating properties were lost due to the rayon material used.
Our reproduction suit is fully reversible 100% cotton poplin with snow white on one side and mouse gray on the other. The jacket has the hood, waist tie, and all the buttons of the original. The internal lining is made of two layers of wool blanketing, to prevent hypothermia in wet weather. We have looked at the other winter uniforms on the market and ours are far and away the highest quality winter suits available. While other companies offer mouse gray versions ot the jacket in the 1943 pattern winter suit; i.e., with skirt drawstring, armband buttons on the sleeves and the wind flap on the trousers, our reproductions are made to the unaltered 1942 specifications. |
