A necktie was called for with the adoption of the tropical field blouse in 1940 with it's open collar. The German Army had already adopted its first necktie with the black necktie for Panzer troops in 1934, but this was the first necktie for non-armored personnel. The color was olive and the tie was of typical 40's fashion, which is to say short and wide. Amusing photos show the newly arrived German troops of the Afrika Korps wearing the tie on conditioning marches, but they also show the tie being worn later in the campaign when personal are off duty and out of the line and on formal occasions.
